Which Colosseum Ticket Gets You Where in 2026

The Colosseum ticket page is where most first-time visitors to Rome get stuck. There are four main ticket types, three release windows, two time limits, and one rule that catches people every day: you cannot enter at any time other than the one printed on your ticket.
This guide walks through every Colosseum ticket sold by the Parco archeologico del Colosseo in 2026, what each one actually lets you see, how far ahead each goes on sale, and when it makes more sense to book a guided Colosseum tour that bundles the ticket with a licensed guide.
Where to buy official Colosseum tickets
The only official seller is the Parco archeologico del Colosseo, through its ticketing site at ticketing.colosseo.it and the ticket office at Piazza del Colosseo, near the Temple of Venus and Rome. Any other site is a reseller or a tour operator.
That is not a bad thing. A licensed tour operator buys the same tickets, but does it the day they are released and pairs them with a guide. When the official calendar shows your date as sold out, a guided Colosseum tour is usually the only way in on that day. Our Colosseum tours all include the entry ticket, so the price on the product card is the total you pay.
Ticket by ticket: what you get
Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine (the standard ticket)
This is the ticket most people mean when they search for Colosseum tickets. It includes:
- Colosseum, first and second levels
- Colosseum Museum
- Roman Forum and Roman Forum Museum
- Palatine Hill and the lower floor of the Palatine Museum
- Ongoing exhibitions
It does not include the arena floor, the underground, or the SUPER sites in the Forum (Santa Maria Antiqua, Curia Iulia, the Temple of Romulus, the Domus Tiberiana exhibition rooms, the Aula Isiaca and Loggia Mattei, the House of Augustus).
Time inside the Colosseum: 75 minutes. When the time is up, you must leave the monument.
Validity: 24 hours from the first entry, for one entry to the Colosseum at the booked time and one entry to the Forum and Palatine area.
On sale: 30 days before the visit date.
Roma Pass holders and Membership Card holders use this ticket type too, but still need to reserve a time slot.
Full Experience Arena
Everything in the standard ticket, plus:
- The arena floor, entered through the gladiators' gate
- All SUPER sites in the Forum and Palatine (Santa Maria Antiqua, Curia Iulia, Domus Tiberiana exhibition rooms, Aula Isiaca and Loggia Mattei, House of Augustus, which is closed on Mondays)
Time inside the Colosseum: 90 minutes.
Validity: 2 consecutive days. One entry to the Colosseum at the booked time, and one entry to the Forum and Palatine the same day, the day before or the day after.
On sale: 7 days before the visit date online, or at the ticket office on the day. Last access to the Colosseum with this ticket is 3:00 pm.
The 7-day window is the detail people miss. If you are planning a trip two months out, you cannot buy this ticket yet. Guided arena floor tours are the workaround, since operators hold allocations.
Full Experience Underground and Arena
Everything in Full Experience Arena, plus the underground. This is the hypogeum, the network of corridors and lift shafts beneath the arena where gladiators, animals and stage machinery waited before a show. Underground access is only in accompanied small groups on a fixed route.
Time inside the Colosseum: 90 minutes.
Validity: 2 consecutive days, same structure as Full Experience Arena.
On sale: 30 days before the visit date. Last access with this ticket is 5:20 pm.
Underground slots are the first to sell out. They are released 30 days ahead and are usually gone within hours. If the underground is the reason you are going, read our Colosseum underground tour guide and book a tour that includes it.
Full Experience Attic
A separate ticket that takes you up by elevator to the upper ring of the building, where ordinary Romans once sat, for the highest view inside the Colosseum and across the city. It does not include the arena or the underground, so you have to choose.
Only Arena
A short ticket for the arena floor alone, with a 20-minute time limit. It exists, but for most visitors it is a poor substitute for a full visit.
The rules every ticket shares
Named tickets. Your name is printed on the ticket. Staff check ID at the gate. You cannot pass a ticket to a friend.
Fixed entry time. The Colosseum slot is the one you booked. Arriving late or early is not allowed, so plan to be at the entrance 15 minutes before your time. The Forum and Palatine have no fixed slot, only the validity window.
Security for everyone. Skip the line tickets and tours bypass the ticket office, not the scanners. Travel light. Suitcases and large backpacks will not get in.
No re-entry. One entry to the Colosseum, one entry to the Forum and Palatine area. Once you exit, you are done.
Time limits are enforced. 75 minutes with the standard ticket, 90 with Full Experience tickets. Guided tours are timed to fit.
Groups. Maximum 25 people including the guide, and from 10 people the guide must use a headset system.
Opening hours in 2026
The Colosseum opens daily at 8:30 am, the Forum and Palatine at 9:00 am. Closing follows the daylight:
- Through September 30: closes 7:15 pm, last entry 6:15 pm
- October 1 to October 24: closes 6:30 pm, last entry 5:30 pm
- October 25 to February 28: closes 4:30 pm, last entry 3:30 pm
Closed on December 25 and January 1.
Free days
Entry is free on the first Sunday of every month and on April 25, June 2 and November 4. Free tickets cannot be booked online. You collect them in person, in order of arrival, at the ticket offices in Piazza del Colosseo and Largo della Salara Vecchia. Roma Pass and Membership Card holders do the same on those days. Expect long lines and no arena or underground access.
How to reach the Colosseum
The entrance is at Piazza del Colosseo, next to the Arch of Constantine. Metro Line B stops at Colosseo, Line C at Colosseo-Fori Imperiali. Buses 51, 75, 81, 85, 87 and 118 and tram 3 all stop within a short walk. Forum and Palatine entrances are at the Arch of Titus, Largo della Salara Vecchia, Via del Tulliano, Via del Foro Romano and Via di San Gregorio.
Ticket or tour? How to decide
Buy the standard ticket yourself if you are visiting more than 30 days out, are happy on the first and second levels, and want to wander the Forum at your own pace. Set a reminder for the day your date opens.
Book a guided Colosseum tour if any of these apply:
- You want the arena floor or the underground. Official slots go fast, the arena ticket is only released 7 days ahead, and operators hold places.
- Your dates are inside the 30-day window and the calendar is already sold out.
- You want the site explained. The Colosseum has almost no signage, and the Forum is a field of foundations without someone to point out the Senate house and the Via Sacra.
- You are short on time. Tours are timed to the 75 or 90 minute limit and skip the ticket office line.
Our Colosseum, Ancient Rome tour with skip the line access covers the standard route with a licensed guide. The arena floor tour through the gladiators' gate and the semi-private arena floor tour add the arena. For a fully private day, the private Colosseum, arena, Palatine Hill and Forum guided tour is the most complete option.
A little history to carry inside
Construction began between 70 and 72 AD under the emperor Vespasian, on the grounds of Nero's Golden House. Titus dedicated the building in 80 AD with 100 days of games, and Domitian added the top story in 82 AD. It seated around 50,000 people under a retractable awning worked by sailors from the Roman fleet. Unlike earlier amphitheaters cut into hillsides, it is fully freestanding, built of stone and concrete on a system of barrel vaults. Knowing that much, the arena floor and the shafts below it make a lot more sense.
