Practical info

Know before you go

1

Vatican Museums tickets are online only

There is no ticket window at the Vatican Museums. Every entry is booked online through the official site, tickets.museivaticani.va, or included in a guided tour. Tickets carry a timed slot, are valid only on the day issued and are not refundable, so set your date before you book.

2

Book early: slots go fast

Official time slots are released in advance and popular mornings sell out weeks ahead, especially April to October. Our Vatican tours include the museum ticket, so if the official calendar shows nothing for your date, a guided tour is the surest way in.

3

Skip the line means skip the ticket queue

A skip the line Vatican ticket has its own reserved-entry lane and a fixed time, so you bypass the wait for walk-up entry. Every visitor still passes security screening at the Viale Vaticano entrance, so arrive 15 minutes before your slot with photo ID.

4

Vatican Museums opening hours

The museums open Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 8 pm, with final entry at 6 pm and halls cleared 30 minutes before closing. On the last Sunday of the month entry is free from 9 am to 2 pm, last entry 12:30 pm. Closed on other Sundays and on Vatican holidays.

5

The dress code is enforced

The Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica admit only appropriately dressed visitors. Sleeveless or low-cut tops, shorts and skirts above the knee and hats are not permitted. Jeans are fine. Carry a light scarf or shawl in summer to cover shoulders at the door.

6

Bags, cloakroom and what you can carry

Suitcases, large backpacks, umbrellas and metal tools must be left in the free cloakroom before the galleries. If you plan to continue to St. Peter's Basilica, do not leave bags at the museums, since you exit on the other side of the walls. A small day bag is fine.

7

Sistine Chapel rules

Photography and filming are forbidden inside the Sistine Chapel, and silence is required. Guides explain the ceiling and the Last Judgment before you enter, using screens in the museum. Elsewhere in the Vatican Museums you may take photos without flash, tripods or selfie sticks.

8

St. Peter's Basilica is a separate entrance

St. Peter's Basilica is free to enter and opens daily from 7 am to 8 pm, last entry 7:15 pm, with a security line in St. Peter's Square. It is not covered by a Vatican Museums ticket. Guided groups can use a reserved passage from the Sistine Chapel to the basilica when the tour includes it.

What to explore in Vatican City

The Sistine Chapel

+

Michelangelo painted the ceiling between 1508 and 1512 and returned for the Last Judgment on the altar wall in the 1530s. It is the final stop on the museum route and the reason most people book a Sistine Chapel tour. Early or late slots are quietest; the chapel still hosts papal conclaves and ceremonies.

Raphael Rooms

+

Four rooms in the papal apartments frescoed by Raphael and his workshop, including the School of Athens. They sit on the route just before the Sistine Chapel, so every Vatican Museum tour passes through them. A guide is worth it here: the philosophers, popes and hidden portraits are easy to miss unaided.

Gallery of Maps and the Pinacoteca

+

The 120-meter Gallery of Maps shows 16th-century Italy region by region under a gilded ceiling. The Pinacoteca, the Vatican picture gallery, holds Raphael's Transfiguration, Caravaggio's Deposition and Leonardo's unfinished St. Jerome, and is often skipped by rushed groups. Ask for it on a private Vatican tour.

Pio Clementino and the classical sculpture

+

The Laocoon group, the Apollo Belvedere and the Belvedere Torso that inspired Michelangelo all live in the Pio Clementino Museum around the Octagonal Courtyard. The Gregorian Egyptian and Etruscan museums are next door. This is the first stretch of the route, before the crowds compress toward the chapel.

St. Peter's Basilica

+

The largest church in the world, built over the tomb of the apostle Peter. Inside are Michelangelo's Pieta, Bernini's bronze baldachin over the papal altar and the chair of St. Peter. Entry is free with a security check, and official guided tours run Monday to Saturday from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm.

St. Peter's Dome climb

+

The dome is booked separately from the basilica, by lift to the terrace or by stairs, and both options include the basilica with a digital audio guide. You visit the inner ring, looking down into the church, and the outer ring above Rome. Open 7 am to 6 pm in summer and 7:30 am to 5 pm in winter.

Vatican Necropolis (Scavi tour)

+

Beneath the basilica lies the Roman necropolis where St. Peter's tomb was found. Only about 250 visitors a day are admitted, in groups of about 12 by language, on visits arranged by the Excavations Office of the Fabbrica di San Pietro. Request well ahead; the Vatican Necropolis tour cannot be booked as a walk-in.

Vatican Gardens and the Papal Audience

+

The Vatican Gardens cover much of the city state and are open only on guided visits booked through the Vatican Museums. On most Wednesdays the Pope holds the General Audience, usually in St. Peter's Square. Papal audience tickets are always free from the Prefecture of the Papal Household; our tours handle seating and timing.

Practicalities

Plan your Vatican visit

Tickets

Book the museums first, then the rest

Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel tickets are the ones that sell out, so lock those in first. St. Peter's Basilica is free, the dome and Necropolis are booked separately, and papal audience tickets are free from the Prefecture. A guided Vatican City tour bundles the museum ticket and the timing.

Opening hours

Vatican opening hours

Vatican Museums: Monday to Saturday 8 am to 8 pm, last entry 6 pm; free last Sunday of the month 9 am to 2 pm. Closed other Sundays and on Vatican holidays including January 1 and 6, June 29, August 15, November 1, December 8, 25 and 26. St. Peter's Basilica: daily 7 am to 8 pm.

Getting there

How to reach the Vatican

The Vatican Museums entrance is on Viale Vaticano, a short walk from Ottaviano or Cipro on Metro Line A. Bus 49 stops in front of the museums; buses 32, 81 and 982 and tram 19 stop at Piazza del Risorgimento. St. Peter's Square is 10 minutes on foot around the walls.

Best time to visit

Beat the crowds

The quietest slots are the first entry at 8 am and after 4 pm, Tuesday to Thursday. Avoid Mondays, when other Rome museums are closed, and the free last Sunday, when lines wrap around the walls. November to February is the low season. On Wednesday mornings the audience fills St. Peter's Square.

Accessibility

Getting around on wheels

Most of the Vatican Museums route is accessible and a barrier-free itinerary is signposted. Free wheelchair hire is available in the entrance hall with ID and a deposit. Visitors with a certified disability of at least 67 percent and a companion enter free with priority access.
