Know before you go
When Colosseum tickets go on sale
Official ticket sales open 30 days before your visit date, with a booked time slot for the Colosseum. The Full Experience Arena ticket is released only 7 days ahead. Underground and arena slots are the first to go, so book the day they open or reserve a guided tour that includes them.
Which Colosseum ticket to choose
The standard Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine ticket covers the first and second levels, not the arena. Full Experience Arena adds the arena floor. Full Experience Underground and Arena adds the hypogeum as well. Our guided tours bundle the ticket and the access level, so you choose the tour, not the ticket.
Timed entry and named tickets
Your ticket carries your name and a fixed entry time. Bring photo ID that matches it and keep it visible at the gate. Entry at a different time is not allowed, so arrive 15 minutes before your slot. The Colosseum entrance is by the Arch of Constantine, near the Valadier spur.
Security checks for everyone
Every visitor passes airport-style security, whatever ticket they hold. Skip the line tickets and tours bypass the ticket office, not the scanners, so lines can still form at busy hours. Travel light: every bag is screened, and suitcases and large backpacks are best left at your hotel.
Roman Forum and Palatine Hill included
Every Colosseum ticket also covers one entry to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. The standard ticket is valid 24 hours around your Colosseum slot; Full Experience tickets are valid 2 consecutive days and add the SUPER sites such as the Curia Iulia and Santa Maria Antiqua.
How long you can stay inside
Time inside the Colosseum is capped by ticket type: 75 minutes with the standard ticket, 90 minutes with Full Experience tickets, and 20 minutes on the arena with the Only Arena ticket. Guided tours are timed to fit. The Forum and Palatine have no time limit until closing.
Opening hours through the year
The Colosseum opens at 8:30 am daily; the Forum and Palatine at 9:00 am. Through September 30 the park closes at 7:15 pm with last entry at 6:15 pm. In October last entry moves to 5:30 pm, and from October 25 to February 28 to 3:30 pm. Closed December 25 and January 1
Free Sundays and holidays
Entry is free on the first Sunday of every month and on April 25, June 2 and November 4. Free tickets cannot be booked online; you collect them in person at the ticket office in order of arrival, and Roma Pass holders do the same. Expect long lines and no arena or underground access.
What to explore inside the Colosseum
The arena floor
+
Step through the gladiators' gate onto the reconstructed arena floor and look up at the stands from where the fights took place. Arena access needs a Full Experience Arena, Only Arena or Underground and Arena ticket, or a Colosseum arena floor tour that includes it. It is the best photo spot in the building
The underground (hypogeum)
+
Below the arena runs a maze of corridors where gladiators and animals waited, with the shafts for the hand-cranked lifts and trapdoors that sent them up into the show. Underground access is guided, in small groups, with the Full Experience Underground and Arena ticket or a Colosseum underground tour.
The first level and Colosseum Museum
+
The first tier is where every visit starts. It holds the Colosseum Museum, with finds and models that explain how the amphitheater worked, plus the temporary exhibitions. Restrooms, a bookshop and the wheelchair-accessible route are all on this level, a short walk from the turnstiles.
The second level and Belvedere terraces
+
Climb to the second tier for the classic view across the arena and the cross that marks the Christian history of the site. The panoramic terraces at the Belvedere and the Triumphalis and Libitinaria gates look out over the Arch of Constantine and the Forum. Included in every standard ticket.
The attic and panoramic lift
+
The Full Experience Attic ticket takes you by lift to the upper ring, the level where ordinary Romans once sat, for the highest view inside the building and over the city. Numbers are limited and it is a separate ticket from the arena and underground routes, so decide before you book.
Arch of Constantine and Meta Sudans
+
Right outside the Colosseum stands the Arch of Constantine, built in 315 to celebrate the emperor's victory, and the base of the Meta Sudans fountain, where gladiators once washed. Both are free to see at any hour, and the arch marks the Colosseum entrance for ticket holders.
The Roman Forum
+
Your Colosseum ticket includes the Roman Forum, the political heart of ancient Rome. Walk the Via Sacra past the Temple of Saturn, the Curia Iulia where the Senate met, and the Roman Forum Museum. Full Experience tickets add the SUPER sites, including Santa Maria Antiqua and the Temple of Romulus.
Palatine Hill
+
Above the Forum, Palatine Hill is where Rome began and where the emperors built their palaces. Visit the House of Augustus (closed Mondays), the Palatine Museum and the Domus Tiberiana exhibition rooms, then take in the view over the Forum on one side and the Circus Maximus on the other.

“Walking onto the arena floor was unreal”
Our guide made ancient Rome feel alive. Walking through the Gladiator’s Gate onto the arena floor was the single best moment of our whole trip to Italy.

Book early, choose the right level

Getting there
How to reach the Colosseum
The Colosseum is at Piazza del Colosseo in the center of Rome. Take Metro Line B to Colosseo or Line C to Colosseo-Fori Imperiali, bus 51, 75, 81, 85, 87 or 118, or tram 3. From Piazza Venezia it is a 15-minute walk along Via dei Fori Imperiali with the Forum on your right.
Best time to visit
Avoid the crowds
The best time to visit the Colosseum is early in the morning or late in the afternoon, preferably on weekdays. Travelling during the off-season (November to February) offers less crowds and cooler temperatures.
Best time to visit
Avoid the crowds
Book the first slots after 8:30 am or the last hour before closing, and pick weekdays over weekends. November to February brings the smallest crowds and cool weather. In summer the late slots are cooler and the light on the travertine is at its best just before sunset.
Accessibility
What to expect on-site
The first tier is fully accessible and an elevator connects the first and second levels; the underground is reached by a freight elevator. Three wheelchairs are available at the first-tier reception. Restrooms, water fountains and bookshops are on the first and second tiers. Paths in the Forum and Palatine are uneven.
