Know before you go
What to expect on a Rome food tour
A Rome food tour is a guided walk of 2.5 to 3 hours through one neighborhood with five or more tastings that add up to a full meal. Ours starts in Monti, the district between the Colosseum and Termini. Come hungry, wear walking shoes and tell us about allergies when you book.
Cooking classes and pasta making
Our Rome cooking class is hands on: you roll fresh fettuccine by hand with a local chef, then plate carbonara or cacio e pepe and finish with tiramisu. Classes run about 3 hours in the city center, no experience needed, and you eat what you make. Great for families and rainy days.
Visiting the catacombs of Rome
The Christian catacombs on the Via Appia Antica can only be visited in small groups with an authorized guide; there is no self-guided entry. The San Callisto catacombs are closed on Wednesdays. The tunnels are cool year round and involve stairs, so bring a layer and skip them if you are claustrophobic.
Castel Sant'Angelo tickets
Castel Sant'Angelo began as Emperor Hadrian's mausoleum, became the popes' fortress and is now a national museum on the Tiber near the Vatican. Book Castel Sant'Angelo tickets ahead: our option pairs the entry ticket with an audio guide or a guided visit, plus a sunset slot with a drink on the terrace.
Vespa, Fiat 500 and golf cart tours
A Vespa tour Rome style means you ride as a passenger behind a licensed driver; no motorcycle license needed. The Fiat 500 tour is a chauffeured classic car, and the golf cart tour is an electric cart that reaches lanes buses cannot. All three include stops at viewpoints and a photoshoot.
Church dress code and museum days
Churches, including St. Peter's and the Pantheon, require covered shoulders and knees, so carry a scarf in summer. Many museums and sites close one day a week, often Monday, and the Vatican Museums close on most Sundays. Use those days for food, Vespa, golf cart or catacombs tours.
Getting around Rome
The historic center is compact and mostly walkable on cobblestones. Metro Line A serves the Vatican and Spanish Steps, Line B the Colosseum and Termini. Fiumicino (FCO) and Ciampino (CIA) are the two airports and Civitavecchia is the cruise port; our private transfers cover all three door to door.

What to explore in Rome
Monti
+
Rome's first rione sits between the Colosseum and Via Nazionale: cobbled lanes, artisan shops, wine bars and the church of Santa Maria Maggiore at its top. It is where our office is and where the Rome food tour and the Monti bar crawl begin. Come back in the evening for aperitivo on Piazza della Madonna dei Monti.
Trastevere
+
Across the river from the center, Trastevere is the neighborhood of trattorias, ivy-covered facades and the mosaics of Santa Maria in Trastevere. Twilight is the best time: the streets fill with locals, and a private food tour or the pasta class pairs well with a walk over Ponte Sisto afterwards.
The Via Appia Antica and the catacombs
+
The ancient Appian Way leaves the city through the Aurelian Walls at Porta San Sebastiano and runs past the catacombs of San Callisto and Domitilla. Traffic is limited, so it is one of the greenest walks in Rome. Our Rome catacombs tour includes transfers from the center, which saves a long bus ride.
Castel Sant'Angelo and the Passetto
+
The cylindrical fortress on the Tiber is linked to the Vatican by the Passetto di Borgo, the raised corridor popes used to escape. Inside are Renaissance papal apartments and a rooftop terrace with the bronze angel and a view straight down Ponte Sant'Angelo, lined with Bernini's angels. Castel Sant'Angelo tickets are timed.
Piazza Navona, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain
+
The three great set pieces of Baroque and ancient Rome sit within a 15-minute walk of each other. The Pantheon is a working church; the Trevi Fountain is free and busiest mid-morning. A golf cart tour or a Rome night tour covers all three when the crowds have thinned.
The Aventine and Gianicolo viewpoints
+
For a view over the city, the Orange Garden and the keyhole of the Knights of Malta on the Aventine Hill face St. Peter's dome, and the Gianicolo terrace above Trastevere looks over the whole center. Both are stops on our golf cart tour Rome route and on the Vespa and Fiat 500 photoshoot tours.
The Colosseum and the Vatican
+
Rome's two big-ticket sites have their own pages: see our Colosseum tours for arena floor and underground access with the Roman Forum, and our Vatican tours for the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's. Both need advance booking; a private driver between them saves an hour on foot.
Day trips from Rome
+
Pompeii, Tivoli's Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa, the papal town of Castel Gandolfo on Lake Albano and the Amalfi Coast are all reachable in a day. Our private transfers take you door to door and wait, or our local planner builds a custom itinerary with pickup and drop-off across Rome, Naples and Pompeii.
What travellers say about Rome
“Came hungry, left family”
Every stop felt like being welcomed into someone’s home. The pasta course alone justified the flight to Rome.
Daniel K.
Australia
Second time in Rome but first time actually understanding what I was looking at. The Forum section was fantastic.

Tickets
What to book ahead
Colosseum and Vatican Museums slots sell out weeks ahead in high season, so book those first and fit the rest around them. Catacombs and Castel Sant'Angelo visits are also booked ahead. Food tours, cooking classes and Vespa tours have small groups and fill on weekends; midweek is easier.
How many days
Three to four days works
Three full days covers the Colosseum and Forum, the Vatican, and the historic center with one food tour or class. A fourth day opens up the catacombs, Castel Sant'Angelo or a day trip. Plan one big site per day and leave afternoons free; Rome rewards wandering more than a tight schedule.
Getting there
Airports, port and stations
Fiumicino (FCO) is the main airport, about 30 km west of the center, and Ciampino (CIA) serves low-cost carriers to the southeast. Cruise ships dock at Civitavecchia, roughly 80 km northwest. Termini is the central rail station on Metro Lines A and B. Private transfers meet you at arrivals with your name on a sign.
Best time to visit
Spring, fall and early mornings
April to June and September to October bring mild weather and long evenings. July and August are hot; plan outdoor tours for early morning or after sunset, when night tours come into their own. November to March is quiet, with shorter lines and the lowest hotel rates. Sundays are busiest at churches.
Accessibility
Cobblestones and hills
The center is walkable but uneven, and Metro stations are not all step free. Golf cart, Fiat 500 and private driver tours are the easiest way to see Rome with limited mobility, and our in-city transfers link hotels to tour meeting points. Catacombs and dome climbs involve stairs and are not suitable for wheelchairs.
Rome tours Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best tour to take in Rome?
+
First-timers do best with a Colosseum tour, a Vatican tour and one food tour or pasta class. If you have a fourth day, add the catacombs or a Vespa ride.
Are guided tours in Rome worth it?
+
Yes, for the big sites and for food. A licensed local guide handles tickets and timing and shows you the neighborhoods and dishes you would otherwise walk past.
What does a Rome food tour include?
+
About 2.5 to 3 hours of walking in one neighborhood with five or more tastings that add up to a full meal, plus drinks. Ours starts in Monti with a local guide.
Can you visit the catacombs in Rome on your own?
+
No. The catacombs are visited only in small guided groups. Our Rome catacombs tour includes the guide, the entry and round-trip transfers from the center.
Do I need to book Castel Sant'Angelo tickets in advance?
+
Yes. Weekend and sunset slots go first. Our option includes the entry ticket with an audio guide or a guided visit, or a sunset visit with a drink.
Is a golf cart tour of Rome worth it?
+
If you have limited time or mobility, yes. The electric cart covers the main squares, fountains and viewpoints in about 3 hours, day or night, with a guide.
Do I need a license for a Vespa tour in Rome?
+
No. On our Vespa tour Rome route you ride behind a licensed local driver. The Fiat 500 tour is chauffeured too. Both include stops and a photoshoot.
What can you do in Rome at night?
+
A Rome night tour by golf cart, an evening food tour or the Monti bar crawl. Fountains and squares are lit and much quieter after 9 pm.
Are private tours in Rome worth the extra cost?
+
For families, small groups and anyone with a tight schedule, yes. Private tours set their own pace and pickup time, and prices are shown on each product card.
