Know before you go

1

Naples food tour: what to expect

A Naples food tour is a 3-hour walk through the historic center with a local guide and generous tastings: fried pizza, cuoppo, sfogliatella, espresso and a slice of Neapolitan pizza where it was invented. You pass Spaccanapoli and the piazzas along the way. Come hungry and tell us about allergies when you book.

2

Pompeii from Naples: the easy way

Pompeii is a short drive from Naples, so a half or full day works without the long return to Rome. Every Pompeii ticket is named and the park caps entries at 20,000 a day, with morning time slots in high season. Our Pompeii tours from Naples include the ticket and a licensed guide or archaeologist.

3

Climbing Mount Vesuvius

The Great Cone trail to the crater starts from the car park at 1,000 meters above Herculaneum. Tickets are sold online only, 50 every 10 minutes, and released 30 days ahead. The crater closes at 3 pm in winter, 4 pm in March and October, 5 pm in spring and September, and 6 pm in July and August. Wear proper shoes.

4

Amalfi Coast day trips from Naples

An Amalfi Coast tour from Naples takes about 8 hours by road across the Sorrento peninsula, with free time in Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. The coast road is narrow and slow in summer, which is why a driver and guide beat a rental car. Sorrento is added on some departures; check the itinerary on the card.

5

Boat tours from Naples

Naples boat tours leave from the city port, cruising the bay to Procida and Ischia for swimming stops and lunch, or along the Amalfi Coast to Positano and Amalfi from the sea. Boats run in the warm season and depend on conditions, so book early in your stay to leave room for a weather change.

6

Castel Sant'Elmo and the Vomero hill

The star-shaped Castel Sant'Elmo sits above the city on the Vomero hill with a terrace looking over the bay, Vesuvius and the historic center. Entry includes the Novecento museum of 20th-century Neapolitan art. Funiculars climb the hill from the center, then it is a short walk. Go late afternoon for the light.

7

Getting around Naples and the bay

Napoli Centrale is the hub for high-speed trains from Rome. The Circumvesuviana line serves Herculaneum, Pompeii and Sorrento, and the Pompei Link bus connects the FS Pompei station to the ruins in about 15 minutes. Ferries and hydrofoils to Capri, Ischia and Procida leave from the port below the historic center.

8

Safety and street smarts

Naples is a lively, dense city. Keep phones and wallets zipped away in crowded streets and on the Circumvesuviana, wear closed shoes on the uneven basalt paving, and carry small change for espresso and street food. Churches ask for covered shoulders and knees. A local guide handles the rest.

Don't miss

What to explore in and around Naples

Spaccanapoli and the historic center

+

The straight street that splits the old Greek-Roman city runs past Piazza del Gesu, Santa Chiara, San Domenico Maggiore and the Sansevero Chapel with its Veiled Christ. The Naples food tour walks this axis, and the UNESCO-listed center is where the city's churches, palaces and street life sit side by side.

Via San Gregorio Armeno

+

The street of nativity makers, where family workshops carve and paint presepe figures year round, from the Holy Family to footballers and politicians. It links the Decumano Maggiore to Spaccanapoli and is a natural stop on any walking tour. Buy small; the artisans ship larger pieces home.

Naples underground

+

Forty meters beneath the center, Napoli Sotterranea runs guided walks through Greek tuff quarries, the Roman aqueduct cisterns and the World War II air-raid shelters, plus the remains of the Greek-Roman theater. Tours in English leave hourly from 10 am to 6 pm, with no reservation needed for small groups. Not for the claustrophobic.

The National Archaeological Museum

+

The MANN holds the finest finds from Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae: the mosaics, frescoes, bronzes and everyday objects that were removed from the sites for safekeeping. See it before or after Pompeii and the ruins make far more sense. It sits at the top of the historic center.

The waterfront and Castel dell'Ovo

+

The Lungomare runs from Piazza del Plebiscito past Castel dell'Ovo on its islet to Mergellina, with Vesuvius across the water. It is Naples's evening walk, with pizzerias and bars along Via Partenope. Our boat days leave from the port a short stroll away, and the Royal Palace and Teatro San Carlo sit at its start.

Pompeii and Oplontis

+

Pompeii needs no introduction, but Oplontis at Torre Annunziata, between Naples and Pompeii, is the villa attributed to Poppaea, Nero's wife, with some of the best-preserved frescoes in Campania and almost no crowds. Our archaeologist-led tour from Naples pairs the two with the museum context. Oplontis is closed on Tuesdays.

Mount Vesuvius

+

The only active volcano on mainland Europe, and the reason Pompeii survived. The Great Cone path circles the crater rim with views over the bay, Capri and the Sorrento peninsula. Our Vesuvius tour includes the transfer up to the trailhead at 1,000 meters and the walk to the rim. Bring layers; it is windy at the top.

Procida, Ischia and the Amalfi Coast by boat

+

Procida is the smallest and most colorful island in the bay; Ischia the largest, with thermal springs and a castle on a rock. A boat tour from Naples to Amalfi shows Positano and Amalfi from the water, with swimming stops in coves you cannot reach by road. Both make a full 8-hour day out of Naples.

Practicalities

Plan your Naples days

Tickets

What to book ahead

Pompeii and Vesuvius both use named, capped tickets sold online only, and Vesuvius crater slots go 30 days ahead. Book those first. Boat days fill in July and August. Food tours run in small groups and sell out on weekends. All our tours include entry tickets where a site charges admission.

How many days

Two to four days in Naples

Two days covers the historic center with a food tour, Castel Sant'Elmo and Pompeii. A third day adds Vesuvius or the Amalfi Coast; a fourth, a boat day to Procida and Ischia. Naples is also the easiest base for the whole bay: every day trip on this page leaves from the city.

Getting there

Trains, port and airport

Napoli Centrale receives high-speed trains from Rome and sits on Piazza Garibaldi, with the Circumvesuviana and metro alongside. Naples Capodichino airport is a short taxi ride from the center. Ferries and hydrofoils to Capri, Ischia and Procida leave from the port below the historic center.

Best time to visit

Spring and fall for everything

April to June and September to October give warm weather for Vesuvius, Pompeii and the coast, and calm seas for boat days. July and August are hot and crowded, and many locals leave in mid-August. Winter is quiet and mild but boat tours pause and the Vesuvius crater closes at 3 pm.

Private tours

Naples private tours

Private Naples tours set their own pickup time and pace: a private driver for the Amalfi Coast, a private archaeologist at Pompeii and Oplontis, or a private boat for the islands. They suit families, groups with mobility needs and cruise passengers on a fixed schedule. Prices are on each product card.
